►Sam Walton, Vice-President, D3 Director
Jefferson County

Sam WaltonD3My name is Sam Walton (not the rich guy) and I am the AHEA director for District III. Originally born in Starkville, Mississippi, but primarily raised in Tennessee… Where I received my Hunter Education card in Memphis in 1993. My wife and I have lived in Birmingham for 11 years and have three children who are 4, 6, and 8 years old.

Some other fun facts; I deer hunt with my dad’s Marlin 336 lever, I love to fly fish and caught a nice grayling (pictured) on the Madison river in Montana, I tend to dove hunt more than I duck hunt, and, oddly, although I’m right-handed… I’m left eye dominant.

There is so much about hunting, wildlife management, and conservation needing to be handed down to the younger generation (my son), that I decided to jump in and help out. My dad did a fantastic job keeping me in the woods and outdoors and AHEA seems a perfect fit for the opportunity to give back.

 Mike Gooch, Treasurer, D1 Director

Limestone County

MikeGoochI am a 64 year old “local yocal” of Limestone County who grew up roaming the creeks and woods of a long-past 1,000 acre share-cropper farm near Athens.  I was born there and both my parents died there.

I harvested my first squirrel from a hickory tree and my first rabbit in front of a pack of ‘family and Beagles’ with my brother’s Savage 22/410 over-under that will belong to my son (some day).  Dove and quail were my favorites long before yelping coyote packs and antlered highway road blocks were pretty common residents.  Outside and Others will always be a cornerstone of my life.

In the 1990’s my interest wandered from hunting more to the shooting sports, firearms safety and youth.  I became a Hunter Education certified instructor in 1999 and a 4H shooting instructor in 2000.  I have coached Alabama state championship air rifle teams and competed in NRA / CMP high power rifle competitions.  I have assisted with H.E. traditional and field day classes ranging through the Northern half of Alabama, middle Tennessee, and even Michigan while on a business trip.

I am and have been very fortunate to work with great DCNR officers and volunteer instructors / teams resulting in being awarded the 2012 Alabama Hunter Safety Volunteer Instructor of the year.  I am a life member of the NRA and member of AHEA since its beginning.  I have served AHEA as treasurer from 2006 – 2009 and as Special Counsel to the Board of Directors.
